Identify Any Potential Negative Consequence of a Technology
Saint Luke’s Health System works proactively to utilize the most up to date resources, which help us offer the best patient care and information security. Our greatest challenge is the many regulatory requirements that have created demand for IT services.Examples include Meaningful Use and ICD-10 and now more recently the National Patient Safety Guidelines issued by TJC. These requirements are driving significant changes in the organization for people and processes. They also are driving the implementation of new systems. One key focus for us is the implementation of Epic Systems, a solution we expect will result in improvements in quality performance, be a more user friendly solution for providers, and enhance practice efficiency due to improved access to information.

I wish there was a fully functional software that could run on any internet browser application, be fully secure, and that didn’t require a middleware such as Citrix to enable deployment on various end user devices and secure PHI. Like most Healthcare CIOs I worry about compliance.
Trends impacting enterprise business environment
Analytics is emerging in healthcare, and I believe it will play a critical role in driving business improvements and identifying growth opportunities. Mobile technology (software, voice, text messaging) is an area that continues to develop. I envision providers and nurses having a single device to access critical information, which leverages voice, video and text messaging to communicate across the organization.
Changing role of CIOs
The IT solutions being implemented impact every aspect of the business, so CIO’s must gain executive team participation in projects to ensure a positive impact. I have also experienced an increase in demand for collaboration and involvement in strategic planning.
My word for a CIO
You need to understand the role of each senior executive in the organization and what they are trying to accomplish. Taking that knowledge and applying it to IT efforts will enable the CIO to communicate the value of the technology to that executive. It also will help identify any potential negative consequence of a technology, and help you to know where to focus work to minimize the impact and gain their support for efforts you undertake.
